OVERVIEW

Bomscombe and Bournemouth pier are well know local surf spots, further round the bay it offers good side shore riding in a westerly wind. Connecting the 2 piers is a beach promenade and road. Along this stretch sandbars regularly form and move creating a good wave spot. In recent years the break has become more soft and mellow and user friendly.

TIDES

All_Tides_Chart.jpg

Ride-able: All Tides

The tide here doesn’t effect the beach safety too much as the beach drops into the deep quickly, It’s generally always around 100 wide. Only the strongest high tides reduce space to around 40 meters wide.

The waves generally hold and peel better in higher tides, if the swell is good. Low tides tides can make the waves crumble early, or form up in smaller swell.

Hazards

The beach here is fairly wide and open, but riders should note the proximity of the groynes which are located every 120 meter, they should ensure to give plenty of clear space.
To the East and West both piers present a large hazard and near by wind obstruction which kiters should stay clear of.
Other Surfers and other beach users should be given priority and plenty of space.

Local restrictions / etiquette

  • Boscombe is a popular surf venue, surfers have right of way and kiters should avoiding riding near them. Generally surfers rider closer to the piers where the waves are better, so the busier the water is the more central between the piers kiters should ride.

  • Being a wave spot, wave rules of the road are generally prioritised here, giving space to a rider on a wave, so riders jumping (on the way out) should give way.

  • Riders picking a wave should enter the circulation and pick a swell line out back, they should be alert to not ‘snaking’ another riders wave.

  • On the beach kiters should stay alert to helping other in need.
